         Leesop Cho (b. 1994, Korea) has created work that perceives sexual identity not simply as part of self-formation but as a key condition for sustaining existence. The artist has used the confusion and scarring experiences of the growth process as a basis for consistently posing questions about our standards for what is “normal,” with work that rearranges narratives concerning the body and relationships. In Cho’s work, the body is a place where relationships form beyond the individual’s outer shell, as well as a structure where both protection and suppression operate. Through approaches of fragmented representation, loose connections, and irregular aesthetics, the artist visually realizes identities that are not fixed and fluid states of the body. While his work originates with personal experiences such as habits, perspectives, and journaling, it expands beyond the realm of personal confession to pursue the deconstruction of society’s heterosexual norms and institutional order. Cho records the ongoing forms of life, exploring the potential for different relationships and ways of being.
